Simple Ways to Naturally Whiten Your Teeth at Home

In 2015, Americans spent over $11 billion on teeth whitening, including over $1.4 billion on at-home whitening products.

There are plenty of products to choose from when it comes to whitening your teeth. However, most whitening products use chemicals to bleach your teeth, which concerns many people.

If you want whiter teeth but also want to avoid the chemicals, this article lists many options that are both natural and safe.

What causes teeth to look yellow

Multiple factors cause teeth to become dull and lose their bright, white sparkle.

Certain foods can stain your enamel, which is the outermost layer of your teeth. Additionally, plaque buildup on your teeth can cause them to look yellow.

This type of discoloration can usually be treated with regular cleaning and whitening remedies.

However, sometimes teeth look yellow because the hard enamel has eroded, revealing the dentin underneath. Dentin is a naturally yellow, bony tissue that lies underneath the enamel.

Here are seven simple ways you can naturally whiten your teeth.

1. Baking Soda and Water

Mix baking soda with just enough water to make it a paste-y consistency that will stick to your teeth. You can add a drop of lemon to the mixture if you’d like, but if you do that, you should leave the paste on your teeth for no more than a minute in order to protect the enamel from the citric acid. If you don’t have lemon mixed in, you can put the paste on for as long as three minutes before rinsing your mouth. Once you’ve mixed the paste, dry off your teeth and then apply the paste.

2. Banana Peels

When you’ve finished your breakfast banana, save a bit of the peel (as long as it’s ripe – yellow, not green, and not brown), and rub the inside of the peel on your teeth. Banana peels help because the potassium in the peels is an effective stain remover. When you’re done with the peel, make sure to brush your teeth.

3. Coconut Oil

You can use coconut oil in two ways to whiten your teeth. The first is the oil-pulling method, in which you swish around coconut oil in your mouth (while being careful not to swallow!) for a couple of minutes and then spit it out. Doing so removes bacteria that can cause stains. You can also mix coconut oil with mashed peppermint leaves and use it as a paste on your teeth. The lauric acid in the coconut oil will, over time, make your teeth whiter.

Try these remedies before heading to the store for a teeth whitening kit. It might take time, but you will see a difference in your smile. Your wallet will thank you too. Having whiter teeth would be great for all of us. Some people are naturally lucky and have white teeth. Try these simple tactics, and let us know if they worked for you.
