What Is a Traumatic Injury?

Generally speaking, a traumatic injury is any injury that occurs suddenly, is severe, and requires immediate medical attention. These injuries typically arise from unexpected accidents, violent acts, and other physically traumatic events.

Examples of traumatic injuries include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (including concussions)
  • Head injuries
  • Skull fractures
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Vertebral fractures
  • Accidental amputation
  • Fractures/broken bones (including compound fractures)
  • Severe lacerations, cuts, and puncture wounds
  • Crush injuries
  • Dislocations, including dislocated jaws
  • Severe burns
  • Myocardial contusions
  • Subdural hematoma
  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Electrical burns and electrical shock injuries
  • Facial injuries
  • Eye and ear injuries

These and other traumatic injuries often arise from car and other motor vehicle accidents, including motorcycle crashes and collisions with large trucks and commercial vehicles. Falls, sports injuries, recreation-related accidents, violence, work accidents, animal attacks, and similar traumatic events also lead to serious, life-threatening trauma.

How Are Traumatic Injuries Diagnosed & Treated?

Trauma is rated on what is known as the Injury Severity Score, or ISS. This is a medical technique to assess the severity of the injury and is correlated with fatality, mortality, recovery time, need for hospitalization, and more.

Using the ISS, a treating physician will assess each injury on a six-point scale as follows:

  1. Minor
  2. Moderate
  3. Serious
  4. Severe
  5. Critical
  6. Maximal

Level 1 minor injuries are considered the most treatable and least associated with morbidity, whereas level 6 maximal injuries are considered untreatable and are most associated with fatality.

At ER of Texas, we utilize state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and a team of all board-certified physicians to provide fast, accurate diagnoses for victims of trauma. Each of our facilities is equipped with cutting-edge imaging technology, including digital x-rays, CT scanners, and ultrasound machines. We also utilize on-site laboratories for further testing and analysis and provide 23-hour extended observation in comfortable, private suites designed to accommodate both our patients and their loved ones.
