Common Causes of Head Pain

Head pain has many possible causes and can indicate a number of conditions, ranging from mild to moderate to severe. Anyone who experiences new, sudden, or worsening head pain should seek professional medical evaluation and treatment right away.

Some of the many causes of head pain, including headaches, include:

  • Infections
  • Colds and fevers
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Ear and throat infections
  • Stress
  • Low blood sugar
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Medication side effects

The first step in treating chronic headaches or new head pain is obtaining an accurate diagnosis. At ER of Texas, our board-certified physicians utilize advanced equipment and diagnostic tools in order to assess your condition and provide a professional diagnosis prior to treatment.

What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that occurs when the brain moves rapidly back and forth within the skull. This can lead to chemical changes within the brain, as well as damage to brain cells that are stretched as a result of the sudden bouncing, twisting, or rotational movement of the brain.

TBIs are so named because they result from traumatic events and accidents, such as motor vehicle collisions or falls. While concussions are typically categorized as “mild” TBIs because they are not life-threatening, they are still relatively serious injuries. Anyone who exhibits symptoms of a concussion should seek medical attention, as the effects can be serious.

When to See a Doctor for Head Pain

If you were involved in any type of accident or traumatic event, such as a car crash or serious slip and fall, or if you sustained any other obvious and apparent blow to the head, see a medical professional. Your doctor can conduct critical diagnostic tests and either rule out or confirm that you have had a concussion. From there, he or she can recommend the proper treatment.

Additionally, if you experience any head pain that comes on suddenly, headaches that are more severe or frequent than usual, or head pain that worsens or does not improve with over-the-counter pain medications, you should see a doctor. If you are experiencing what feels like the worst headache of your life or a severe headache accompanied by any other warnings signs—such as confusion, fainting, a high fever, stiff neck, trouble walking or speaking, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, or numbness/partial paralysis—seek immediate emergency care.
