Unfortunately, there are occasions where a fever can be a sign of a medical emergency –particularly for children and infants. Below, you will find warning signs of a fever emergency for different age groups. Please visit an ER immediately if you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone you love.
Emergency fevers in infants younger than 90 days:
- The fever is 100.4 degrees F or higher
- Difficulty breathing
- Rash
- Chronic crying
- Vomiting
- Sleeping past feeding times
- Discoloration on the skin
- Redness or swelling on the body
Emergency fevers in infants between 90 days and 36 months:
- The fever is 102.2 degrees or higher
- Difficulty breathing
- Rash
- Long time since last urination or bowel movement
- Chronic crying
- The baby has not received vaccinations
- Difficulty keeping fluids down
- Sleeping past feeding time or has a hard time waking up
Emergency fevers in children:
- The fever has been 102 degrees F for more than 2 days
- Difficulty breathing
- Inability to urinate or pain while urinating
- Stiff neck
- Discoloration on the skin
- Difficulty swallowing or speaking
Emergency fevers in adults:
- The fever is 103 degrees F or higher
- Nausea and vomiting
- Severe headaches
- Sensitivity to light
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal pain
- Rash
- Difficulty speaking
- Seizures
- Dizziness and disorientation
