Protocols for U.S. Healthcare Facilities

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued guidelines for various healthcare facilities based in the United States. These guidelines are intended to serve as a framework for patient and staff safety and provide healthcare facilities with the necessary tools to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The CDC’s guidelines for healthcare facilities include:

  • Preparation: To stay prepared, the CDC recommends that all healthcare facilities stay up to date on the COVID-19 pandemic as a whole, as well as on local outbreaks and community news. The CDC also recommends that healthcare facilities create, review, and implement emergency plans for increased staff absenteeism and medical supply shortages.
  • Communication: Healthcare facilities should not only share pertinent COVID-19 information and resources with their staff but also with patients and members of the community. This should include updates to facilities’ policies and information on safety protocols, among other items.
  • Protection: In order to protect staff members and patients, the CDC recommends that all healthcare facilities implement measures to screen patients prior to entrance/admittance for COVID-19 symptoms. Facilities should also ensure that their staff uses proper PPE (personal protection equipment), such as facemasks, gloves, etc. Additionally, facilities should advise any staff member who is sick, experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, or has knowingly been exposed to the virus to stay home.
  • Enact Patient Safety Measures: The CDC also recommends that healthcare facilities implement specific safety protocols to ensure that patients at the facilities are kept safe. This includes separating any patient who is displaying signs of COVID-19 from others and enacting strategies to avoid unnecessary exposure, such as setting up telecommunications, video consultations, email systems, and other distanced methods of communicating with and treating patients (when appropriate).

At ER of Texas, we are dedicated to following all of the CDC’s latest guidelines for healthcare facilities. In addition to enacting all of the above safety measures, we are also ensuring that our physical locations are frequently and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
